"Hold On" is a song by American song grouping Wilson Phillips. Information technology was released on February 27, 1990, as the lead single from their debut studio anthology, Wilson Phillips (1990). The unmarried topped the United states of america Billboard Hot 100 for a week in June 1990 and was the nigh successful single of that yr in the United states. The song won the Billboard Music Laurels for Hot 100 Single of the Year for 1990. At the Grammy Awards of 1991, "Hold On" received a nomination for Song of the Year, losing to "From a Distance" by Julie Gold and performed by Bette Midler.[one]

In 2017, Billboard ranked the vocal number xv on their listing of 100 Greatest Girl Grouping Songs of All Time.[2] In 2020, Cleveland.com ranked it at number 37 in their list of the all-time Billboard Hot 100 No. ane song of the 1990s.[3]

Groundwork [edit]

Chynna Phillips wrote the vocal's lyrics while battling substance corruption likewise as being in a "actually bad" relationship. She explained to Kelly Clarkson, "I just said if I don't change my class, I'm going to be in a lot of problem."[4] Producer Glen Ballard presented the track to the group, noting information technology needed lyrics. Phillips based the lyrics off of the principles taught in AA, specifically the thought that things had to be taken "one day at a time." The side by side mean solar day, Phillips returned with "Agree On" and sang it for the Wilsons and Ballard, who immediately loved information technology. "I remember one guy I played it for said, 'That's not going to get anywhere. That's not a very expert song. Information technology's really corny,'" Phillips recalls. "I but think thinking to myself, 'God, I hope he's wrong.'"[5]

Commercial operation [edit]

"Hold On" became Wilson Phillips' kickoff number 1 single, reaching the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 on June nine, 1990, and, despite spending only i week at number i, was ranked the height song of the year by Billboard. (This was the second and most recent concurrence of this to date, the first of which was "Stranger on the Shore" by "Mr." Acker Bilk in 1962.) The song also spent a week atop the adult contemporary chart that same year. In add-on, "Concord On" peaked at number vi on the UK Singles Chart; this was in large part due to a performance by the group on the legendary British music serial Pinnacle of the Pops a calendar week prior to the song's peak position.[ citation needed ]

Despite existence number one on the US year-end for 1990, the song did not appear on the 1990s decade-stop chart. Information technology does, even so, announced on Billboard's 60th ceremony "All-fourth dimension chart" at number 228, ahead of many songs that practise appear on the decade-end chart.[half-dozen]

Critical reception [edit]

Alex Henderson from AllMusic felt the vocal is non "remotely convincing."[7] Bill Coleman from Billboard described information technology as an "engaging and melodic pop confection".[8] In 2020, Tony L. Smith from Cleveland.com wrote, "A decade or two ago, Wilson Phillips' inspirational canticle 'Hold On' wasn't regarded every bit anything more than than a cheesy (perhaps the cheesiest) pop song from the Nineties. Only opinions change. For a generation large on nostalgia, it gets no bigger than 'Hold On,' a song that has good times written all over it."[ix] The Daily Vault's Christopher Thelen stated in his review of Wilson Phillips, that "Hold On" is "the defining moment for the album, setting the tone for what was to come up besides as letting the listener know that all they take to do is sit back and enjoy the ride."[10] A reviewer from Music & Media chosen the vocal "melodic, well crafted and extremely catchy", and "everything you would expect from a band madeup of daughters of rock stars."[11]
